I went to Boston seven years ago. That was my first to the United States. I studied language in Merryimack College for three months. The school is in the countryside in a town called Andower. It is a quiet, peaceful and small town. There were no buses or maxlines, only trains if you wanted to go downtown. There was only two ways to get downtown either drive a car or take a train. I lived with a host family; they picked me up at the airport and drove me up to school everyday.
I was very excited when I started to study in school. There were eight people in each class. We had listening, reading, idiom and writing class during the day. We had a lot of homework and speaking practice. When I had a short vacation, I took a train downtown and visited my friend. Both of us wanted to go abroad to study, so we had a plan to visit the same place, Boston. She studied downtown with her other friends, and I studied in the countryside by myself. I graduated from the University last year. I would like to go to graduate school. I didn't know what to study so, I studied language first. Even though I knew about the United States from movies and television before I came, I still had culture shock. For example, we usually boil water then drink it if we would like to have water, but America people turned on the water faucet than drank it. That was amazing. It could never happen in Taiwan. And, the smoke detector went off at midnight. I was hungry so I cooked instant noodles but the hot steam rose and set off the smoke detector. I was so worried because it was midnight night and the sound was loud. My house parents hurried downstairs check to see what was happening and I felt so embarrassed at that moment.
Never the less, we had no school because of the snow. One day, when I woke up in the morning, it was snowing through the windows and after a second my house mother told me no school today. That so interesting. I couldn't understand the reason at that time. I later understood was that it was because it was dangerous. I didn't have any plans on which major to study so after three months I decided to go back to Taiwan.
There were few Taiwanese people in Andover, even where there were Taiwanese I always avoided speaking Chinese so my English improved fast after three months. When the airplane arrived I saw Chinese advertisment I was so impressed. I pushed myself to speak English and studied English very hard when I was in Taiwan. I love my country even though it is noisy and dirty. After that trip, I felt very deeply that I was poor not only in English skills but also for life knowledge. I learned how to send e-mails when I was in the United States. Also, I learned how to cook spaghetti. Compared with Americans I was not independent enough. Although, I spent a lot of money during three months, I had a wonderful experience. I told myself in my heart I would be back one day in the future.
